i finally like katy perry.

i won't deny it: i love katy perry's "roar" so big.

it reminds me of the times i enjoyed a song that was seemingly about a broken heart by replacing the person who'd done the breaking with "the man."  you know--stress.  the things in life that interrupt our stride and weigh our smiles down into sagging, frowny, scowls.  "roar" is a song about recuperation.  and the liberation that comes from learning to rely on one's own strength, and trusting one's ability to get through shit.  yeah, it's catchy, and cheesy, and the music video takes place in a very happy, bright, jungle where an elephant lets perry paint its toenail and a tiny monkey poses for pictures, but come on.  who wouldn't want to hang out with an elephant?  or have a monkey pal?  perry's cuteness is finally starting to win me over, because she's moving away from the embittered anthems or adolescent proclamations that brought her initial success in the pop music industry--she's growing up, and she's growing on me.  if young girls are going to have their ears barraged with pop music, it might as well be something empowering, rather than something that is so blatantly, predictably, about liking a boy, being in love, breaking up, or whatever other anthropocentric cliche has been revisited a gazillion times.  i cannot help but dance to it, and it lifts my spirits the way that music can and should.

the end.
Entry update: I no longer like Perry. After her trip to space, that she used to promote her upcoming tour, I had a healthy dose of the reality that she is simply another spectacle to earn money. She does not use her platform to promote awareness. She does not speak out against fascism. She's a puppet content in her materialism and privilege. No, thank you.
